And now to the 2nd batch; of 26 Warch 53:
In the 2rd batch, only 2 are Venus; 13M(oartigevitte) and 4 (Cape.
Vincent) Herch. There is a possibility that also the 15 “arch, Cemany, was the ster
Sirilis. Most ‘interesting to me is March 18, ‘illians ATP. This one could be a Lenzel
mirage. ‘Would be Antevesting to know elevation above hori gon. Would be interesting
to have questionnire filled out on this one. I f the heading had been 270° instead
of 96%, these might very well have been Sundogs. iy guess is,however, that this vas
some sort of meteorolozical phenonena,
v
Now as to the remainder, the 23 March Casper could have been a meteor if
the reported 2 minutes is in error, l'ow large wes the disk? Does altitude here
refer to elevation? ‘that is your opinicn of this one?
The 15 itarch Courtlands could have been a meteor. The short time of
observation sees to make follow-up not worthwhile.
The 19“!arch Newfoundland case is very interesting, but only one
observer. The fact that the messured ceiling was 2700 feet puts a limit mx to
height. Were there any witnesses? If so, this wou)d be worthwhile following up.
The 18 “iarch Great Falls, Yont., gives us another Nocturnal !eandering hight.
Can a balloon be ruled out? I think a questionaire herea would be approprdate. Maybe
you ought to station a special ovserver at Creat Falis]

The 19 March Tanavwanda has insuffieient data. The 21 Warch Elmira is
quite interesting but observed Only a few seconds. I dont see how Menzel can explain
this one.
the 13 arch oe el]. AFB has insufficient evidence,
Finally, the 1"March Greenville, could be a balloon.
In both batches there are 3 cases I should personally like to follow up.
Those are Shaw AFB, 5 March; Vins AFB 16 March; and 18 March Great Falls.
My plan, Lieutenant, is to concentrate on relativly few cases that show
promise of affording scientific data. I purposely: wanb to keep the number of cases
dovm for xm obvious reasons of time limitation, If it becomes possible to
obtain the services of one full time assistant, then I could assign certain follow
vp jobs which would facilitate matters a great deal.
I hope we can discuss these and other matters at your visit here 22 April.
Rest Wishes,
Sincerely.
P.S. Any further word on the Port Austin Case’ of 17 Feb?
I should appreciate talking tith Dr. Kaplan concerning the
Menzel plan.
