STAT SMSNT

The following statement is submitted in accordance with Paragraph

lp Capte Robert 8. Bailey, the pilot of a C=;7, on a course of
13 degrees, 70CO' altitude amd at an indicated airspeed of 170 kots,
oticed an unusual oodject in the vicinity of the Vichy xadio cange
jtationg which approximated a circular light which, from ay position,
apceared to be approximately one foot in diameter. the light of varying
intensity appeared to be on a collision-interception course 2rom
aovroximately 232 decrees. I turned on my landing Lishts te warn
che object of my presence and notiiies tne coepilot ami crew chief
of my sightinge They corrocorated m= observation and watched as the
soject appeared to position itself approximateiy one mile off the
left wing or at 325 degrees. The liznt varied in intensity and color
from red through amber to green. it remained visible for 5-10 minutes
during which time it dropped back, relative to the aircraft, then
increased its speed and made three dives and sooms on a course
parallel to that of the aircraft before disappearing. The Crew
Chief and a seaman passenger reported the light disappeared upward
at a right angle to the previous course. I executed a CIAVIS
in-flight report to the Vichy Radio xange Station.
