SUMMARY: (han anda @eanes Yreak Glee vignificence in fnal ons-sentence peregraph, List incloourrs af lower Left, Begin text of report on AF Form 118—Pert 11.)
13ea- On 19 Dee 52, at C650K, three (3) ground crew personnel of the 5ith Strat.
Recon. sgdn. reported that they sighted an unidentifiable object traveling
an approximate heading of 270 degrees fran Andersen AFB, at a speed | 1
estimated to be considerably in excess of that of a convertional jet
a
aircraft.
b. The ovject appeared to be cylindrical in shape, silvery color with a |
_ bright silverish flame trailing fran the aft section. There was no
exhaust or vapor trail observed. A similar or the same object was
observed by two pilots of a B =-17 at approximately 130 miles fran Guam
on a heading approximately 270 degrees during the same time span aa the
original. sighting from the ground.
COMMEITS of Preparing Officer: -< os4 |
There appears to be no reason to doubt the validity of the observers
cieban of sighting . flying object. Although the ground observers have
not been trained in oisera ts identification the two pilots have had
considerable experience and stated the object sighted did not appear to
be a conventional type aircraft to their knowledge.

ing shape of the nose or leading section, The tail seemed to have the
appearance of exhaust gases extending to the rear about one-half the distance
of the objeot. The solid pant of the 9dj20t waa aluminum color and was

The object was sasily discernible to me when first pointed out but
only remained in view for approximately six (5) sedondsa. From the clouds
and horizon I estimated the distance between the object and our aircraft
to be 20 = 30 miles.
Checking with Guam control at 0700K, I inquired if other aircraft vers

| Anderson AFB, Guan aX - 9 December 1952
Ie Description of Incident
From 2050 to 2055 hours an unidentified aerial object was sighted from
three separate points of observation -- (1) ground crew personnel at Anderson
AFB, Guam, (2) a Naval Officer 1 miles south of Anderson AFB, and (3) from
an inconing B-17 115 miles from Guan on a westerly heading. The object or
objects in all cases were reported to be on a heading of 270°, appeared cy-
lindrical in shape, of silvery color with a bright flame trailing from the
rear. The speed was considered to be in considerable excess of that of a con-
ventional jet and in each case the sighting ¢id not exceed 5 seconds.
II. Discussion of Incident
The object was seen at 0850 a.m. at which time it would be too bright to
see a meteor or star. It appears that all observers saw the same object since
descriptions, directions given to the unknown, and time of sighting alli coincide.
The B-17 pilots sighted the object 115 miles west of Guam, five minutes after the
other sightings and yet the object was reported to have been going west of Ander-
son AFB five minutes earlier. This seeming discrepancy here might be explained by
the fact that the time estimate by the B-17 pilots was off. The object appears to
be going too slow to be a meteor and all local aircraft have been accounted for.
There was a scheduled balloon launch at Guam at 2100Z close to the sighting time )
but the description of the object does not coincide with usual balloon descripticas.
III. Conclusion .

STATEMENT OF MAJOR MekOWN
On the merning of 19 December 1952 while enroute from Kadena to
Andersen in B-17, # 3661, an object was sighted by the undersigned. At
the time of sighting, I was flying as pilot in the left hand seat.
Captein MacDonald whe was in the right seat pointed to the object and \
brought my attention to it. This object at first glance appeared to bs
another aircraft ia our ismediate vicinity by on looking closer, I real-
ized that it was not a conventional type of aircraft.
It. was cylindrical in shape and I was unable te netice any iisting- |
wished shape of the nose wr leading section. The tail seemed to have
the appearance of exhaust gases extending to the rear about one-half
the distamce of the object. The selid part of the object was alusinus :
coler and was moving horizontally in a westerly direction.
This incident occurred prior to our ETA, O7COK, at the 190 nile
beundry to Guam, and I would estimate the time to be between 0645 and
0655 K. We vere flying at 7000 feet and the object appesred to be about
9000 and 10,000 feet. Our magnetic heading at the time was 150 dezrees,.
The object wes casily discernible to me when first pointed out but
only remained in view for approximately six (6) seconds. From the
clouds and horizean I estisated the distance between the object and our
alreraft to be 20 = 39 alles,
Checking with Guam control: at 0700K, I inquired if other aircreft
were in the area and was informed that none were knom to be although
a Rescue aircrait had departed Andersen at O64,

- On 19 December 1952 at about 0650 heurs, I was sitting in front of
Nose Dock #2 on the 5ysh Stratecic Recennaissance Rem Area at Anderser.
AFB, Guam, M. Iee awaiting toll call. One of our aircraft had been ree
ported returning to the base and I was just looking all around the skies
thinking I might see it. When I loeked in the Southeasterly part of the
sky, suddenly, this object flashed out from behind a bank of clouds. I%
was so bright I called to the other fellows, “Look at the falling star".
-I% continued on from the East and went behind a large cloud. When the
other fellows turned te look, it was zonc, mementarily, and then reap-
peared in anether opening between clouds. It was travelling in such a
straight flat line that I ne longer theught it was a ‘falling star". I
could new see that there were two distinct pertions to it; a bright, shiny
metallic front eni and a bright, silverly blue flame coming out of ths rear
end of the formrd portion. There was no neisé and no smoks or vapor
trail behind the object other than the bright silverly blue flame which
peemed to be slightly longer than the object itself. The object ead
flame was long and slender and travelling about tyice as fast aa any je
. plane I've ever seen. When I last saw it, it disappeared behind a et
bank just south of us. Ye kept watching further along where there vas
another ovening in the clouds, but it never reappeared. I%¢ didn't turn
or make any manuevers while we saw it,

There was an epen space in the cleuis and Airman Johnsen, and Adams, |
and myseld kept watching this opening fer abeut 1 or 2 seconds, Suddenly
a silvery, matallic object which appeared te me to be cylindrical flashed
past quite aways behind the cleuds, It ws travelling in a very straight
horizontal path heading about 270 degrees (from compass directions checked
later). The object was travelling about twice as fast as a jet plane. Ii
had a bright silverish flame trailing from the rear end, There was no smoke
trail or vaper trail behind it, I could not hear any noise and i* thers
was any, the wind was from the NE, not strong, but it weuld have carried the
sound away. ' | |
I only saw the object for about 1 second, but I don't think it was
a metesrite for twe reasens: First, it travelled on toe straight a line -
I have observed falling stars before, and they have always had some curve
ta their path; second, it was too silvery matallic appearing. It definite-
_ ly leoked te me as theugh there was a bright silvery flame attached directly
to it. The flame seemed te be slightly longer than the object.

Se At O65CK on 19 Dee 1952 an unidentified flying object ms reported being
‘gighted from Andersen AIB by three airmn of the 5th Strat. Recon, Oqdn.e At
the eame time, 065K, a similar or the same object was sighted by a Navy Comender
attached to Steff Commander Naval Terces lmrianas. Subsquently, at approximately
0655K the same or similar object was sighted hy two pilots at a position 115 miles
| fyom Guam, (approximately located at 15 degrees 15'N = 143 degrees 56°E), From
gpelysis-of the statements and interviews of subject personnel the object appears
te nave Been cylindrical in shape of wmidentifiable size, The fornmard part of thea:
“object appeared to be silvery in color with @ bricht silvery blue flame trailing
Dehind. Thé estimated length of the flame varied from one-half the length of the
object to three times its lenzth., The speed of the object appeared to be con.
siderably, in excess of conventional jet aircrart mt no estimte was attempted in
miles per hour, The object ma not reported being audible, The object in «ll
cases disappeared behind clouds after a short interval of observation, ‘The
Neval Commander stated the object appeared very similar to that illustrated in
Life Magazine of April 7, 1952. All sightings were from epproximiely 0650x
te 0655K and no sighting wes for more than 45 seconds duration, All sightings,
. . Both. from ground and air, were visual, The air sighting ms made wy two pilots
of a Bel7 enroute from Okinawa to Guam flying at an altitude of 7000 feet on a
megpetie heading of 150 degrees and an indicated air spsed of 175 3PH. ‘The:
object at thia time was estimated to be 9000 to 10,000 feet in altitude ani
20 te 30 miles away’at approximately 1) degrees }}"=30"N - 143 degrees 55'X,
Theee of the ground observers were at Andersen AFB (13 degrees 35'N = 1h)
dearees. 56'S). ‘These observers could not give an estimate of distance or altitude
but stated the object was traveling on a heading of approximately 270 degrees.
The Veveal Commander mas located at approximately 13 degrees 27'N - 14) degroes
43° 45°F. No sstimate ms made of the altitude or distance but stated the object
passed south of his position heading in a westerly directicn. io information is
available on the reliability of the Naval Officer’s sighting. The three airmon
are comparatively inexperienced in aircraft indentification and are not rated
personnel, These airmen state, however, that they are certain the object mas .
pot a meteor since the trajectory was horizontal, and did not have the appearance
or any meteor ever observed by then,
+
The two pilots beve hed considerable flying experience and it is felt that
their judgement is sound, One of the pilots is a weather officer and stated the
_ @bjeet did not appear to be a metecrlogical phenemmnon, The existing roather
' @® Andergen AYB during the time of sighting was as follows:
OS59K < 1000 feet scattered, estimated 30,000 feet broken, visibility 8 milos,
020/18, altimeter setting 29.35. |
1000 feet scattered, estimated 9000 feet broken, 30,000 feet overcast,
dility 8 miles, wind 020/15, altimoter setting 29.07.
~ 1200 feet acattered, estimated 9000 feet broken, 30,000 feet overcast,
ty 10 miles, wind 110/19, altimeter setting 29.89. The weather at the
locat of the air sighting was approximately the same as above.
was no ectivity or condition, metecrological or otherwise which mizht
account for the sightings. There was no physical evidence of the sightings such
as frageents or photographs of the sightings... There was no interception or .
S@entification action taken on the sightings. At the time of sighting the only
known treffic within the area wes a Rescue SB-29 which had taken off from jnderzen
