taneously and then disappearod object appeared to be level with the
intercepting F-94 .000 feet. Airborne radar and visual contact
wore simultaneous and lasted for r 15 minutes. F-94 attempted to ontact local
GCA but without succoss. Weather was clear above 3,000 feet ne of sight
ing was 1915 PST.
II. Discussion of Incident
Two additional F-94 the general area but at lower altitudes and
thus are eliminated as possib sighting. description of
remely ge" is significant: Upper air regearch
balloons aro tear-shaped and nslucent polyethylene cruising
altitude expand to as much length. The equipment hanging below
. the balloon is making return to airborne radar. Although ATIC : has
received no record of upper air research balloon tracks for this date the des-
cription of the object allows a preliminary evaluation of "possible balloon"

vispa! contatt. but got a radar lock-on. They reported that "UFOTYPE
when they attempted to close on it again, it would reverse
divection and drop away. Several times the plane altered course MAGAZINE
itselt becayse collision seemed imminent. There was a solid
undlercast of cdouds. which would climinate the possibility of
relraction of ground lights.
In cach oi these instanees. as wcll as in the case narated
next. the sourees of the stories were trained airmen with ex.
cellent reputations. They were sincerely bafled by what they
had seen. They had no conceivable motive for falsilying or.
"dressing up" thcit reports. 2
In the other instance, with the "white object with two win-
. dows," we found that a skyhook balloon bad bcen plotted at
the csnrt site of the "batle." =

exact bearing of the Unknown object. Atmospheric refraction would
have produced exactly the phenomenon described. The same at-
mospheric conditions that caused the mirage of the star would have
caused anomalous radar returns (see Chapter vm).
