Following is a letter fron ae Radio Engineer, employed by the Netherlands
Cable Factory, Delft, dated 8 _

"This letter comes to you from i from Delft. the industrial town between Rotterdam and
The Hague in the Netherlands; — The Dutch Cable works are situated in this town and
I am working inthe Physical Laboratory of this factory.
last week I was making tests on 4 V.H.F. antenna which is constructed on top of
the roof, (See picture No : i. This antenna is a so called corner reflector, freq-
uency 119.3 Mc/s*
' Before this antenna I was making measurements with a field strength meter. On
a certain moment I got the maxinmm reading of my indication instrument and I tuok

my Zeiss Ikon camera to verify this reading while my assistant Mr Jekeemebebebes hold
the field strength instrument (See picture No 2).

Thereafter I asked him to go downstairs to get a soldering iron.

I went on making tests and at ):15 C.E.S.T. (3:15 G.M.T.) I loaded the camera to
make another picture of ths indicator and then I suddenly saw a bright silver light
noving at a tremendous speed and coming from my right side, (South direction Rotterdam)
It looked like a silver V2 rocket, (We had a rocket lauacher just a fow miles from
our home during the war), There was no sound to hear but when "the thing" came closer
it turned towards me and looked like a bright silver round plate, I thought it might

be a flying saucer, As I still holded my canfera I only pushed the shutter (T 1/250
sec) without looking in the view finder because there was no time to lose, Then I

looked at the field strength meter and I noticed a strong dip in the meter deflection

of the indicating instrument. The saucer disappeared with a tremendous speed per-
pendicular to the earth surface, (Time 4:35 C.E.S.T. 3:35 G.M.T.)

I immediately rushed to the Photographic Laboratory where NM de-

veloped the negative (glass 9 x 12 cm) and we both got the thrill of looking at the
first negative of what we thought was a flying saucer, ~

At home I phoned "fhe Telegraaf" one of the leading newspapers in the Netherlancs
and the next day head editor Mr Wim and I went to the Meteorological institute
in the Bilt (near Utrecht), The experts were very excited about this photo. They

thought the bright corona around the saucer could be due to ultra violet rays and
furthermore deformation because the lens of my camera was fully opened without using

the diaphragm, (I had no time to lose, I only tried to make a photo in the shortest

possible time)”

Pollowing is a t on of a.letter from the Royal Netherlands Heteorological
Institute, to dated 1 September 1952:
4 "It will probably interest you to know which are the results of the measurenents

on last Thursday, The place where you have photographed the phenomenon is situated
20 degrees south of the east, The center of the disk is situated 20 degrees above
the horizon, The diameter is 9 degrees,

When you state that you have only seen the middle part of the disk, the diameter
cust still be 3 degrees, or 6 times the diameter of the sun, For this reason it is
still a great puzzle to me that not a stream of inquiries have reached K.N.H,I.,
moreover ag, on account of the dense traffic on the road between Rotterdam anc The
Hague, it should have been sean extremely well, because the sun did not interfere.
For this reason ths phenomenon remains for me a great query mark,

Finally I like to remind you of your promise to give me a list of all persons
ho did ring you up or wrote to you,

For this I thank you in anticipation.

I also express my thanks for your c ration during the investigation,"

Pollowing is a translation of an article which appeared in the newspaper "Nieuws van |
de Dag":

STRANGS PHENOMENON PHOTOG: APHED ,

Gee and at the same time our country has at last his flying saucer! Whimsical)

a3 a young woman the enigimatic phenomenon has, for a few seconds, froliced in the sky
‘jof industrious Q@@iiend would havo disappeared again, unnoticed in the haze of tha
ether if a young man had not been able to arrest it in it's orbit,

For whereas the intellect can only register and digest impressions, the photo-
graph speaks plain language.

Tuesday morning the young ~ prytigs nechanicq@ggy employed by the Neth-
erlands Cable Factory, was occupied on the roof of the weak current factory, with
testing high frequency cables. For that purpose he had with him a large plate camera
(Zeiss Ikon with a £6,3 lens) in view of photographing the position of some indication
instrumeats, He was already for some time carrying out this job and just on the point
of making another photograph, for which purpose he had his camera fixed, when he sud-
denly noticed an extrenely bright light which was, as appeared later, moving from
south to east.

KIND OF ROCKET
WBee1.2d bis camera, hold it towards the light and without looking into his
ewfincar, took the snapshot. After the plate was developed the result proved to be
. successful beyond expectation as shown by the reproduction above, '
It approached as some kind of a "rocket which produced very much Licht’ —_
old later on, ."It had then the shaps of a coaster moving horizontally. It then
opplsd over suddenly and shot practically perpendicularly into the air, At about
hat moment IJ took ths snap",

The whole of the phenomenon did not last more than 10 to 15 seconds, Thanks to
his eae training QP was able to remember all the cetails very well, The tiie
WAS 335 P.M.

It wag only a watter of instances, The thing approached, the eye and the brain
did register it. Nyhof thought: "You never know, it might be a flying saucer,.,"
he pressed the button of the camera and - extraordinary peculiarity - looked then
at the measuring instruments which were avout him, They deviated entirely and only
came back to their normal position very slowly.

This afternoon I have gone with Mr Nyhof to the Royal Netherlands Meteorological
Tnstitute at the Bilt. ‘There, with creat speed, a conference was organized of a number
of chiefs of sections who were very anxious to put this young "saucer researcher"
hrough his paces, aad :

After a debate of one hour, their conclusion was that this observation had bean
"very important", As far as is known unique in this country, They would investigate

he matter further on the basis of the negative of the photograph of the camara with
hich the plate was taken, |

It was ascertained that the enormous size which the object (or reflecticn) pro- |
duced on the photograph must be an optical illusion, as the great beam of light which . |

from it may have formed a halo on the plate which made it appear so large beyond :

proportions. ‘ |

Another possibility which was suggested at the K.N.M.I. was, that the size on the

hotograph can be a consequence of the “invisible” (ultra violet) rays, which the eye

n not see but which are registered by the photogravhic plate, The "deviation" of
he hand of the measure instruments might be due to an electro-magnetic cisturbance
or to a magnetic influence of the moving coil galvanometer,

but whea the matter of fact question is put "what did really hapren?", the
scientists keep their mouth shut and then also reason keep silent, and only imagina-

ion is let loose, , !
