—AN CUSSTANDING S)SHTING
THS KT, KILIMaNJARO GNIGMA,
—~ wis eb. “= =e oe ee
Pobruary 19, 1951, dawned bright ana clecr at Nairobi, Konya,
Colony, Zast Africa,
At Nairobi West Airport, thse re, ular jonday morning, Lodestar
was readied 2s ususl for its morning flight to Lio, vasa, and soon
passongors filed aboard, littlo dreaming, cuy of them, of what wis to
most thoir astounded ayes baruly 20 minutes later,
at 7 a.m. exactly witn 9) passen,ers and = crew of 2 aboard,
the Lodustar took off,
all went well until 7.20 a,m. wnen suddenly tne radio officer
Grew the attention of his spperior Capt. J, Bicknell, to w briynt
object Like a wnite star, apparently nan in, motionless oasily °
10,000 ft, above it, ‘Kiliminjaro.
Capt, Bicknell's first reaction, he said leter, was to say’
nothing, Tho two watched tne strange obycct for 5 minutos, tnen, as
it showed no signs of vanisning, ‘informed the passungurs, One began
promptly stuaying tne oddity, amazealy through a powerful pair of
ficld-glasses, whilst the radio officer flasaca an excitcd call to
- Bastleigh noarby, giving cn account and description of the thing.
Bastloigh's suggestion flashed in return was that the object
might bo a drifting Metcoroligics1 balloon, but checkin, on tnat
possibility, after inspecting the. eni, uatic object for Several min-
utes, Capt. Bicxncoll found that tas wore he oxaiinea it, the less it
could possibly be wista«ccn for «. bulloon, It was a aull silver colour
and marked at re,uler antervals slong tny fuselage witn vertical dura
! bands, The cntire outline, hu Bruna, was unuistaxcadly distinct; nor,
' tnou,n it appeared to bo incredibly distant, wes its snaryp outtLine
obscured in the least detcit by intervuoning haze
vag. Bicknell estimated tne thing wus over 200 rt. long, bullct-
shaped, and apparently constructud of metal which snone brigntly, On
first dachtine it, the Lodestar was hvading roughly towards it, and
watching it closoly as they opproaciicd, Capt, Bicknell purccivid anotinur
Gutail, Tho thing possessed a~ square-cut vertical fin at ons ond,
There were no signs of movement, it was absolutuly stationary.
“So it remained for 17 minutes. Passongers of the Lodester were
now taking turns with the fiold-rlesses sn + : wh aii had caiiens 3

oastwards, slowly at first, and rising as it did so, Bofore it
reached 40,000 ft, at ‘which point j* “1s “Lbimately Lost si,nt of,

marred the perfectly strosinlincd hull. 4 and Nd
The day being vxcuptionally clear, thuro were no cloud for
mations im ovidence auywhere, and Capt, #icancvll calculated that in
' the 3 minutes of visible movement, tnc buLlot-sncped objuct covered
60 miles; that in othur words, its Spoud coula have been nothing
short of 1,000 u,p.h, during the period of observed flight, It
Loft behind no vapour trail and to oll whe saw it, nad ho visiblo
moans of propulsion,
‘During an interview some days lnter, Capt, Bicknell said thist
his imprussion was thet tho unidentificd thia, was some kina of
fiying machine, and with this, nis radio officer, e kr.D.W, Merrifield,
unhesitatingly agrecd, \ 'mirage' was suggested as tha possibls
‘cousG, ‘but the radio officer discounted it, "hirages are rorely
’ goon without cloud", he started, “nor would that explain the objuct's
movenent", Hs commonted tnat if the object was a flyin, mochine
“it was 500 years anvad or anything we have today”.
Wairsbi “Sundcy Post* tne followin, Sunday said: "If this
-Teport nad come from 2 few isolatva individuals it woula sven be
discounted But it csiwoe from responsible airline officials and
nino ordinary travelicrs", It too, diswissed oota tic balloon and
'mirage' theories, and concluded tnat hopes or a “natural” expldna-
tion had begun to fade Other theorios ran,ea from Maritan visitors
to radio-controlled weapons, |
Fragmentary evidence accrucd since then increases the sum
total of knowledge but little, U.S,"LIFE" Magazine early in 1952,
published a sketch of theo objoct, which showed it to closely resemble
an ordinary lipstick tube lying on its side, More recently, in
connection wita learning the whereabouts of the photographs taken
from Capt, Bicknell's plane, the australicon Flyin; Saucor Bureau’
learnt that "the only «Known public photoyraph of the object shows)
a blurred spot on the film", aA motion picturu film taken ‘by another
‘passenger wes “quity clozr* wa learn, but the same reliable source
Stated, cither laconically or ominously, it is hard to tall which,
that "the man with film is supposed to have disaypeared”,
So the caso stands, at present, one of the wost puzzling and
enigmatic unoxplained Saucer Sightings recorded in Australian
ae Saucer Bureau Filus.
