the object could not have ben a Japanese kite due to the speed,

on the ramp and was not observed again possibly due to
heat waves cuased by the 7-30 warming uc on the ramp. !

aircraft airborne at the time of sighting. (ne F-80 flew
across the objects aprarent flight path at right angles
appraxisately one mimute after observers sig!.ted object.
NO evidence could be found of the possible releasing of
testing devices in the vicinity.

At approximtely 1530 hours on 23 August 1949, the undersigned
observed a light or silver-colored rectangular ob‘ect travelinr at
an estimated speed of 490 miles ver hour. This odject did not re-
' semble an aeroplane but appeared identical to a rectangular tow-
! target. ;
| The object was traveling in a northerly direction at approximtely
200 feet altituae or less and paralleling the coast line. This
officer was about three miles from the object and oheerved it during
approximately five miles of travel.

This officer was in the company of Via}, Se, carc.

the 49th Fighter Group Overations when this sighting ms maie. Upon
my Calling attention to this object, these three officers cdiscernec
the ob‘ect immetia*tely and all admitted a confusing lack of recornition.

The object disanp:;eared behind an =B-l17 parked on the ramp. shortly
thereafter, thic officer noticed a local Fe90 in the same vicinity; at a
higher altitude and itn the opinion of this officer there was no similurity
in appearance or lightness of color to the odject in question.
