Statement; "On the night of 29 March 1949 I took off from Shemya at 2140
hours BST on a routine Loon Able weather roecornaissance mission. Since an
engine was feathered shortly after takeoff, I desided to remain aloft ovar
Shemya approximately three hours to lishten the weight of the aircraft
befors landing. At approximately 2205 hours while approaching Shemya
range from the southwest at an altitudes of 2400 Peat, the co-pilot and left
soanner reported that wa had passed a lishted object approximately 100 feet
DeiOw US, This I reported to Semichi tower and asked if there were any
other aircraft in the vicinity. Ths only reported aircraft was a North-
west Airlines aiccraft which had taken cf? a few moments praviously and
soooerted te de cn ooursee. I alarted tha entire crew to be on the lookout
for any aircraft in the vicinity.
At aooroxinately 2255 hours while in a procedurs turn at 5000 fset
jas% south of the iciand a Light was sighted apyvroaching from ow left.
This was clearly sean to pass directiy overhead and om to our rizht to
vyanian among scattered clouds in the distance. Since we were ina turn
and on a westward heading at the time, the light was in a northerly heading,
At the time I judged it to be 1000 feet above us and traveling 400-1,00
miles per hour. The possibility of this light being a meteor confronted
ne, but it was traveling in what seemed a definite horizontal altituda
and the light seemed steady in intensity, which diminished the possibility
sf this being a meteor. Tha light itsel? sesmed to be a blue-white color
and had the appearance of an exhaust in shape. This was resorted to
Semichi tower.
There were no further observations."
