DETAILS:

1. This investigation wes requested by District Commender, léth
District OSI (1G), USAF, Hill Air Forge base, Ogden, Utch, end wes pre-
dicsted upon a report that ir. Comrunications Chief, Elko lire
port, Nevada, had observed five (5) vee shaped objects flying in the

vicinity of Elko, Neveda.

ELKO, NEVADA

2. Investication conducted at Civil Aeronautics Administration,
U. S. Department cf Commerce, Elko, Nevada, on 7 June 1949, revealed that
kir, HENRICH is not emrloyed at the Elko Airport, but is a Yard Clerk for
the western Pacific Railroad Company, Elko, Nevada. ir. YALE D. haSKINS
Aircreft Communicator, CAA, stated he had received the report fro
by telephone and produced ea file copy of the nmessaze which he (hASKINS)
forwarded to Selt Lake (Exhibit A) and which read as follows:

Report from Western Pacific Cfe,.

kr, @ERME Yerd Clerk reports sighting a series of five
objects in V-shaped formation at about 1,000 feet travelinz

west bound at a hizh rate of speed. Nc scund accompanied
them. Sichted over Elko, Time of sighting O200P. He eadvd
could have been large plene with swept wings or five objects,

Objects were lighted.

The copy cf the message or file at the CAA Office bears a time stamp
indicsting it was sent at 0245 PST on 29 May 1949. HASKINS stated he
was nct sure of the exact time he received the telephonic repcrt from
HENRICH, but it had been between 0200 hours and 0230 hours on 29 May 1949.

3. Review of the communication files maintained at the Civil Aero-
nautics Administration, Elko, Nevada, revealed that the following aircraft
were in the vicinity of Elko, Nevada at times indicated on 29 May 1949:

a. NC 59484 = enroute to Sinclair, Wyoming. Over Elke at 0222 FST,
Altitude 15C00 feet.

be NC 79975 - enroute to New Jersey, Over Elko at 0243 FST.
Altitude 130CO feet,

Aireraft personnel did not report any unusual aircraft or activity in the

vicinity.

4. Review of the files maintained at the .eather Bureau, U. S,.
Departirent of Commerce, Hlko, Nevada: Latitude 40°50'N; Lonsitude 115°
47'w revealed the following information relative to weether conditions

on 29 hay 1949:

a, ©132 PST; broken cleuds st 70CO feet; visibility 15 miles;
wind west at 3 miles per hour; temperature 52°F;

Dewpoint 42°F,

b. 0207 PST; broken clouds et 7CCO feet; visibility 15 miles;
wind southwest at §& miles per hour,

¢. 0230 PST; broken clouds at 7000 feet; visibility 15 miles;
wind southwest at © miles per hour; temperature
47°F; Dewpoint 41°F; occasional lightning ‘Vest of
Elko.

d. 0306 PST; scattered clouds at 7COO feet; visibility 30 miles;
wind southwest at 11 miles per hour; occasional
lightning west of Elko,

5. On 8 June 1949, vr. QReres,, Yerd Clerk, iiestern Pacific

Railroad Company, Elko, Nevada, was interviewed at his hone,
Elko, Nevade, and the following statement (Exhibit B) was obtained:

At approximately two A.M. on the morning of May 29, 1949, while
attendinz to routine duties in the freight yard cof the iiestern
Pacific isilroad Company in Elko, I noticed five ander cclored
lights approximately five miles distant and at en eltitude cf
1000 feet. The lights were in a vee formation about 150 feet

apart end heading iiest at a speed of over 500 miles per hour.
I could hear no sound and there were no visible signs cf exhaust,

The lights were steady, giving the appeerence of beinz seen throuch
a windew, rather then that of a rey cr beam. fihen they diseypyecred
it wes as if an obstructicn or projection on an aircraft had come
into ry line of visicn,

I do not. know how long the lights were within my sight cr the
distance they covered during that pericd. I coule not distinguish
any outline arcund them and do not know whether they came from one
very large aircraft or five smaller ones flying in formation.

height, distance, spacing or speed.
